Early Neonatal Transport Technology
The pictures below show several different early neonatal transport incubators. Typically, these incubators were hand-carried, and were moved from home to hospital by car or train.
Some of the earliest neonatal transport units as we know them today were developed by Dr. Julius H. Hess in Chicago around 1923.
The "Hess Premature Infant Ambulance" was manufactured by V. Mueller and Co. in Chicago, Illinois.
Dr. Hess published a short description of his invention in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
