The Division of Neonatology at MUSC serves as the Level III Perinatal Regionalization Center for southeastern South Carolina and is the only Level IV Center in the state. The program is ranked as a top Neonatology program by US News and World Report. The Division currently has 13 faculty, approximately 30 APPs, and 9 neonatology fellows. In addition to the Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine fellowship, MUSC has the only Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellowship in South Carolina.
The David and Laura Stone Neonatal Intensive Care Unit comprises the entire 5th floor of the MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital. Opened in 2020, it consists of 82 beds including single patient, mother-baby couplet care, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation rooms as well as a minor procedure room with full anesthesiology readiness. Each year approximately 2,700 newborns are delivered at the Medical University of South Carolina, and an additional 12,000 babies are born within our referral area. These deliveries generate approximately 1,000 admissions to our intensive care nurseries. Neonatal transports account for 40 percent of the total admissions to our NICU with free-standing transport teams able to provide ground, helicopter, and fixed wing transport. We collaborate with all pediatric subspecialties as well as pediatric surgery and pediatric surgical subspecialties.
The Division is committed to the provision of outstanding clinical care and cutting-edge research. Major areas of academic interest include neonatal nutrition (clinical, translational, and bench research), neonatal kidney injury (translational and clinical research), neural injury (translational and bench research encompassing prevention through recovery), epidemiologic investigations, and research QI. Faculty have access to collaborations with bench researchers in the Darby Children’s Research Institute located on campus, one block from the children’s hospital. Additionally, the division has a history of collaboration with multiple pediatric specialties, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and adult investigators.
