The position may also include providing care at our Level II NICU at Eastern Connecticut Health Network in Manchester, CT and at the Level IV NICU at Connecticut Children’s in Hartford.

The Division of Neonatology at Connecticut Children’s has an opening for a full-time neonatologist to serve as Medical Director for our new Level II nursery at Backus Hospital in Norwich, Connecticut. The position may also include providing care at our Level II NICU at Eastern Connecticut Health Network in Manchester, CT and at the Level IV NICU at Connecticut Children’s in Hartford.
SUMMARY
The Backus Medical Director has clinical requirements and is responsible for the day-to-day management of newborn operations within the Backus Hospital special care and newborn nurseries. The role is directly accountable for performance with respect to clinical care, quality, patient safety, operations, finance, and customer satisfaction.
The Medical Director will be responsible for working with multidisciplinary teams and divisional faculty leaders to evaluate evidence-based Neonatology practice recommendations, reviewing and updating current protocols and procedures along with the development of new initiatives. The Director will work with the CCMC NICU Quality and Safety Officer, fellow CCMC Neonatology site directors across the network and the division chief in implementing standard clinical practice.
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership Responsibilities:
- Assure the professional performance of all medical staff and advanced practice providers in the department who have delineated clinical privileges.
- Recommend to the medical staff the criteria for clinical privileges that are relevant to the care provided in the Program.
- Participate in administrative activities of the department.
- Assess and recommend off-site sources for needed patient care services not provided by the program or organization.
- Integrate the program or service into the primary mission of the organization, including education and research.
- Coordinate and integrate with other programs and clinical services, as well as within intra and inter- department programs.
- Work collaboratively with others on program goals and planning/evaluation, including resource planning.
- Collaborate with others to develop and implement policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of clinical patient services.
- Continuously assess and improve the quality of care and services provided. Actively participate in relevant committees, either on a membership or ad hoc basis, which are responsible for the quality of patient care and services.
- Participate in quality improvement programs, as appropriate.
- Participate in orientation and continuing professional and/or clinical education of all clinical personnel in the department or service as requested. Actively contribute to education of all learners within the NICU environment, including interns and residents.
- Support efforts to optimize appropriate reimbursement for Department services. Maintain cost-effective approach to clinical program management.
- Maintain professional expertise through active involvement in professional organizations and continuing education programs. Encourage team members to adhere to professional standards and to expand competencies.
- Demonstrates cultural sensitivity in all interactions with patients/families.
- Demonstrates support for the mission, values and goals of the organization through behaviors that are consistent with the CCMC STANDARDS.
Clinical Responsibilities:
-Provide assessment of patients by obtaining a comprehensive history. Examines patients to obtain objective physical data and supporting information through laboratory and imaging modalities.
- Formulate a differential diagnosis and develops a reasonable treatment plan to include pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions and making appropriate referrals as indicated.
- Maintain ongoing documentation of patient interventions within the timeframe established by policy, to include documentation of initial assessment, treatment plans, progress notes and any other patient interactions, to include telephone calls.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Education Required: M.D., or D.O. degree required
Education Preferred: Active Scholarly Program with publication history is desirable but not required
Experience Required:
Successful completion of residency and fellowship program as applicable
7 years experience
5 years Supervisory/Leadership experience
LICENSE and/or CERTIFICATION REQUIRED
Active CT Physician license
Active DEA
Board eligible or certified in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine as appropriate.
