Preface

Of those obstetric questions which, due to their practical significance, are justified in claiming more general interest, the treatment of apparent death in newborns is particularly suitable for a monographic study.
There is certainly no shortage of excellent works on this subject, but these predominantly focus on the theoretical side of the question, and several decades have passed since the publication of the last major works.

Guided by these considerations, I initially intended to treat only the procedures currently used in the case of apparent death in newborns in a comprehensive manner and, as far as my experience allows, based on these procedures in a larger work.

In the course of the necessary preparatory work, the further it progressed, the more the need arose to investigate the development of individual resuscitation techniques. In this way, such a wealth of stimulating material accumulated that I decided to undertake an independent study.

When working on the clinical part, it seemed necessary to consider a large number of forensic questions relating to the apparent death of newborns. This, too, resulted in such rich and interesting material that I considered it worthy of independent study, all the more so since, to my knowledge, no such study has yet existed.

As I hereby present the first, historical, part of my work to the public, I hope to be able to follow it with the clinical and forensic sections before the end of the year.

I feel obliged to express my warmest thanks to the esteemed W. Braumüller publishing house for their willing consideration of my wishes regarding the presentation of my work.

Prague, Whitsun 1898.
Dr. Ludwig Knapp.
