[Note from the Webmaster: This book provided a broad overview of the state of the art in neonatology practice and knowledge as of 1980, a time when neonatology was a new specialty, NICUs as we know them today were (so to speak) still in their infancy, and neonatal care was rapidly evolving. It had only been 5 years since the first neonatology board exams were given and the first cohort of neonatologist certified. Many of the technologies and best practices we take for granted today were as yet unheard of. Forty years later, many of the things you will read here may seem hopelessly outdated … and they are. But it’s a good snapshot of how the environment we neonatologists worked in ca. 1980.]
