Internationale Ausstellung für Körperliche Erziehung, Gesundheitspflege und Sport, Innsbruck, 1896

The Exposition Internationale d’Éducation, Physique, des Sports et d’Hygiène* was held at Innsbruck in the Saggen district from June 13, 1896, when it opened with a formal ceremony, until late in the autumn. It was organized by a private initiative under the patronage of Archduke Ferdinand-Charles, with Dr. Frédéric Mörz, bourgmestre of Innsbruck, as president of the central commission. The main exhibition hall had been purchased from Prague in 1892 and first used for the 1893 Landesausstellung, then reused for this event. Exhibitors came from Austria-Hungary and from Germany, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland, England, Spain, Portugal, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Russia; the official French rapport counted 509 exhibitors overall (a German press account cited in that rapport gives 486).
The stated aim was to present the auxiliary means of physical education, hygiene, and sport, together with the trades and industries attached to them. The exhibition was organized into twelve classificatory groups (the prize lists and one press account use a thirteenth for miscellaneous objects). The event was paired with an extensive competitive program: a new 400-metre cycle-racing track built in the Saggen, international prize-riding and prize-jumping, a fencing tournament, a billiard match, and football, with two English clubs committing to take part. A showpiece attraction was a wooden rotunda housing a giant circular painting of the third Battle of Bergisel (1809) by the Munich artist Michael Zeno Diemer. Two closing dates are on record: the Stadtarchiv Innsbruck heritage account gives October 4, 1896, while the French rapport states the exposition closed on October 23, 1896.
According to the Rapport général sur la section française, the Œuvre maternelle des couveuses d’enfants (Lion, directeur) was awarded a Diplôme d’Honneur in Groupe I, the highest exhibitor prize at Innsbruck, ranking below only hors-concours standing, and appears in alongside the Union française pour le sauvetage de l’enfance, the Société de l’allaitement maternel, and the Hôpitaux marins. The Groupe I category covered “Alimentation, soins et éducation physique de l’enfant” from birth to age six, including infant-feeding apparatus and installations for children’s rooms. A collaborator’s gold medal went to Auguste Narçon (printed in the rapport as “Marçon”), who managed several of Lion’s installations together with his wife. The Rapport gives no physical description of the exhibit. Lion’s own Paris souvenir booklet lists the Innsbruck result as a “Grand Prix”; but no Grand Prix class existed here, so that term is an upward gloss of the Diplôme d’Honneur.
A search of the French and Swiss press found no mention of the incubator exhibit itself and in fact the Innsbruck exposition received very little press coverage overall. It is notable that Lion or his delegates also exhibited in Berlin, Geneva, and Rouen in 1896.
